How to join

Joining couldn’t be simpler, simply complete the Contact Form below.

Find some of the frequently asked questions below. If you have any questions that are not answered, please do speak to your Leaders or get in touch using the Contact Us.

Who can join Cubs?

Cubs is open to all, and adjustments can always be made locally to make sure everyone can join in the fun. You don’t need to have been a Beaver Scout or involved in Scouting before. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to chat with your local leader as soon as possible. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure their young person has the best experience possible. More information on specific adjustments can be found at https://www.scouts.org.uk/accessibility-at-the-scouts/

Moving On from Beavers? - What is the joining process?

Moving On Award

If you are moving up from 1st Markfield Beavers, you will likely be completing the ‘Moving On Award’. This means you will attend both Beavers and Cubs for at least 3 weeks. This helps to familiarise yourself with Cubs, whilst providing the opportunity to finish off any outstanding badge work at Beavers. This may not be required or suitable for everyone, so please speak to your Beaver Leader in the first instance.

Investiture

Like with Beavers, after 5-6 weeks of attending Cubs, you will be invested. Parents will be invited to the ceremony and you will begin your journey now as a Cub Scout at 1st Markfield. You should by this time have purchased a uniform – see below – and continue to wear your 1st Markfield necker. Where possible, you should transfer the membership, county, district, 1st Markfield and any staged activity and bronze awards to your Cub uniform (you can however, request new badges at a small cost if you wish). If you are unsure, you can speak to your Cub or Beaver Leader.

Payments

Once you start attending Cubs, you will join our Online Scout Manager – more on this below – and payments will now need to be paid through this system. If you have been paying monthly, you will need to cancel your standing order with the bank as soon as possible after starting Cubs. If you have been paying termly or yearly, please let your Cub Leader know. Payments are due by the end of each month and you can make payment at any time, this provides the flexibility for you can continue to pay from the next date payment is due or change the date. If you have any concerns or issues, please speak with your Cub Leader.

You can find out more by visiting Subscriptions and fees.

Joining 1st Markfield for the first time? - What is the joining process?

Contact Us

If you are interested in joining us, click the Contact Us button in the top right hand corner. You will need to let us know some basic information to help us get back to you.

Response

We will be in touch to arrange next steps. If there is space at 1st Markfield Cubs and you are of the right age, we will confirm you have a preliminary space, provide you with the date of the first meeting (which could be as soon as the following week) and ask you to complete a short online form prior to attending your first meeting with us to gather a little information about you and some contact details.

If we do not currently have any space available, we will ask whether you would like to join our waiting list. We may also provide you with other local groups contact information.

Your first night

During your first night, we will introduce you to our Cub pack and introduce you to some of our usual games and activities. You can find out more about what to expect from Cubs at https://www.1stmarkfieldscoutgroup.org.uk/cubs/. You should start to learn your Cub promise, you will be practising this for a few weeks ahead of your investiture.

Sometime shortly after your first night, parents will receive a login to our Online Scout Manager, this is where we hold all our records about you and your parents/carers, make payments, and update attendance and badge progress. The first step for parents will be to complete the personal details pages and to set-up payments. The e-mail will include details about what is needed and links to supporting guidance.

Investiture

After 5-6 weeks from starting at Cubs, you will be invested. This is were you will make your Cub Scout promise, receive your necker and joining badges, and will officially have joined 1st Markfield Scout Group and worldwide scouting. Your parents/carers will also be invited to the investiture.

How much does Cubs cost?

You can find out more by visiting Subscriptions and fees.

Each group charges a fee (called subscriptions or subs) to cover the costs of running regular meetings – which covers scout hut costs, annual scout membership, insurances, materials for activities and games and badge costs.

There are sometimes extra charges for special activities, camps and events.

You will need to purchase a uniform, these usually cost between £20-30 new, or you may find cheaper second-hand.

Cubs is designed to be an accessible and affordable way for young people to learn lots of new skills through a single membership. Nobody should feel excluded from Cub activities because of money worries. If they’re concerned about costs, adults should speak to their local leader in confidence, to see what they can do to help. In most cases, support is available to make sure nobody misses out.

What should I wear?

On your first night at Cubs, you’ll be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something you feel comfortable in. If you were previously a Beaver and your uniform fits (children grow up so quickly!), you should wear your Beaver uniform.

Before your investiture (usually week 5-6) you should get your own Cub uniform to wear to meetings and camps (of course, you can purchase and wear your uniform before this time as well). Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of the Pack. It also gives you a place to show off all the badges you earn. For Cubs, the uniform consists of a green sweatshirt and a coloured scarf or ‘necker’ to represent your local group.

Uniforms can either be bought from Leicestershire Scout Shop, National Scout Store, online at another supplier, or you may find a second-hand uniform on sites like eBay, Facebook.

Where do the badges go?

You can find out where badges go on the uniform by visiting Badges and Awards Page.
